Cumulative long-term recurrence of diabetic foot ulcers in two cohorts from centres in Germany and the Czech Republic

AimsOur aim was to comprehensively estimate the incidence of diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) recurrence and corresponding risk factors in two cohorts.MethodsProspective data from patients with active DFU diabetes centres Germany (GER, n = 222) Czech Republic (CZ, 99) were analysed. Crude cumulative incidences obtained. Additionally, time investigated using multivariate Cox models.Results69%(154) GER 70%(69) CZ experienced at least one recurrence; 25%(56) DEU 15%(15) died; 5%(11) 9%(9) lost follow-up. The crude first year 28% 25% CZ; 68%/70% within ten years, 69%/70% 15 years. In GER, renal replacement therapy associated shorter (HR 3.71, 95%CI:1.26–10.87); no history before index lesion longer 0.62, 0.42–0.92). CZ, type 2 2.57, 1.18–5.62) treatment by minor amputation 2.11, 1.03–4.33) recurrence.ConclusionsCumulative approximately 70% years both cohorts. We found a significantly higher future having consecutive compared ever ulcer.
